Characteristics
The name is deliberately chosen, as this route is an evolution of the similarly named “Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi Hut Tour”, although the starting point is now Siusi rather than the the Val Gardena and, while the distance on the Alpe di Siusi is identical, there is more distance and climbing involved. Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high pastureland, offers an extensive tour with a magnificent panorama of the Dolomites. While this can be admired from the saddle, it is even more enjoyable from one of the many huts along the way, whose differing characters entice hungry and thirsty cyclists to stop awhile. The tour is physically demanding but it is also a paradise for technical experts, with its exciting trails and gravel roads, especially on the descent back to Siusi.
Staring from the Tourist Information Office in Siusi, you warm up gently on the first kilometres to the Infopoint San Valentino. Then comes a longer training stretch: a climb of 600m to Compaccio up the Strada dell’Alpe di Siusi, closed to traffic from 9 a.m. After a short section of road in the direction of Saltria, you turn off after the Hotel Steger Dellai onto the path up to the pass. This is a wonderful high-level route with an idyllic view of the Schlern/Sciliar, allowing you to reach the Alpenhotel Panorama (380m from waymarker 25). In good weather this short detour is a must, as the hotel offers a 360° view not just of the nearby summits such as the Langkofel/Sassolungo, Plattkofel/Sassopiatto, Marmolada, Sella Group, Sas Rigais, the Geisler/Odle peaks, Rosszähne/Denti di Terrarossa and Schlern/Sciliar with the Santner Spire, but on a clear day you can the Zillertal and Stubaier Alps or even the Ortler/Ortles!
The climb continues, past the traditional Almrosen Hut and up to the highest point of the tour just before the Mahlknecht Hut. You must decide which of the many huts you will visit: not for nothing is this tour called the “Hut Marathon”.
A fast descent of some 300m towards Tirler is followed by a climb on a gravel road in the direction of the Zallinger Hut, a real gem: the view from its terrace to the south-east reveals the “flat” face of the Plattkofel/Sassopiatto, lit by the afternoon sun, while to the south-west is the panorama of the Plattkofel/Sassopiatto Hut, Palatsch/Palacia, the Mahlknecht Hut and the Rosszähne/Denti di Terrarossa.
The next kilometres are largely downhill in full view of the Plattkofel/Sassopiatto and Langkofel/Sassolungo. From the Jender Valley, rather than going directly to Saltria, you take a wide detour around the Wolfsbühel, a rise to the west of the Jender Valley. The beautiful, tranquil pastureland is relatively flat and represents the Alpe di Siusi at its finest. The Sanon Hut is the next opportunity for refreshments, with the excellent food a fitting reward for the short extension to the tour (250m to the right at waymarker 57).
Pedal a short stretch on the road towards Compaccio then, just below the village near the Zorzi Hotel, a hiking trail turns off in the direction of the Spitzbühel car park. After the Jaggl Schwaige Hut the path becomes an enjoyable trail leading you to the car park of the Spitzbühel lift.
Now comes another feature to delight the experts, the narrow, tricky trail to Gstatsch, which partially follows an ancient cart track: be careful here, as it can be very slippery when wet or after rain. From Gstatsch you continue downhill in the direction of Bad Ratzes. After crossing the stream of the Frommer Bach/Rio Fromm you re-enter the civilised world, joining a gravel road. Under the ruins of Hauenstein Castle an undulating trail begins that leads to the car park at the bottom of the Alpe di Siusi aeriale cable-way. This is just a few minutes from the Tourist Information Office in Siusi, the original point of departure for this unforgettable tour.

Coming from the north:
take motorway (A22) exit for Chiusa- Alpe di Siusi, SS12 as far as Ponte Gardena, then in the direction of Alpe di Siusi.
Coming from the south:
take motorway (A22) exit for Bolzano nord - Alpe di Siusi, SS12 as far as Prato all’Isarco, then in the direction of Alpe di Siusi.

There are several car parks and underground parking facilities in all villages. Parking spaces marked in blue are subject to charges. Tickets are available from the appropriate automatic machines.
