Characteristics
The second part of the Dolomite Wild WoMen Trek is over the Alpe di Siusi. This varied, challenging 14 km ride leads up to the Spitzbühel, with its a wonderful panorama over Castelrotto below and the Santner Spitze/Punta Santner, the northernmost pinnacle of the Schlern/Sciliar. From this point the tour becomes a marathon over Europe’s largest high pasture, characterised by unforgettable panoramas, culinary treats and riding fun that nevertheless requires some technical skill. Bikers are spoilt for choice when it comes to taking a break, as the Alpe di Siusi alone offers five guesthouses or huts, with something to suit everyone.
Starting from the tower in the picturesque centre of Castelrotto in the direction of San Valentino, the first 2 km of the Strada dell’Alpe di Siusi offer the perfect warm-up. The first steep climb, which falls into the category of “no mercy for your calves”, leads up to the panoramic road in the direction of Wasserebene to the crossroads for the Schafstall Hut: an ascent of 200m with an average gradient of 20%. Fortunately, the Schafstall offers a pleasant opportunity for a refreshment break before the easy, highly enjoyable stretch via Marinzen to Gstatsch.
Now comes a short training stretch, 250m up to Compaccio on the Strada dell’Alpe di Siusi: this road, which is closed to the traffic from 9 a.m., is the only real way to ride up.
The perfect, 16% gradient of the climb up the top of the Spitzbühel lift will once more test your strength. After 200m ascent, however, you can relax: the Berggasthaus Spitzbühel inn, with its wide panoramic terrace, dominates the valley like an eagle’s nest and is in fact a favourite departure point for hang-gliders. The beautiful scenery is complemented by the imposing Santner Spitze/Punta Santner, which appears close enough to touch.
Like pearls on a necklace, the tour passes the huts and inns on the Alpe di Siusi: the Laurin Hut, the Alpenhotel Panorama and the Almrosen Hut, each with its own atmosphere and charm, all against the wonderful backdrop of the Dolomites.
The descent from the Almrosen Hut is perfect for technical specialists. A wonderful trail followed by the path through the downwards to the Tirler Hut and another chance for a pause.
Past Saltria you reach the upper Jender Valley and, after a short climb, the tour heads to Monte Pana, followed by a short and enjoyable trail towards Ciaslat.
The remaining part of the tour leads via La Selva towards Selva: shortly before you reach the village, turn left and take a fast downhill along the left bank of the Grödner Bach/Rio Gardena to cover the last 7 km into St. Ulrich/Ortisei.

Variations
1. Simpler climb via the Strada dell’Alpe di Siusi: do not turn left at the Maso Schildberghof farm in San Valentino (waymarker 8) but instead carry on straight up on the /Strada dell’Alpe di Siusi to Gstatsch, where you rejoin the tour described above at waymarker 24.

2. Tour excluding Spitzbühel: at waymarker 30 do not bear right at the Spitzbühel car park but take a sharp left onto the Strada dell’Alpe di Siusi. Turn right into the Via Giogo by the tourist information office in Compaccio and rejoin the tour described above at waymarker 45.

3. Short cut via Santa Cristina: at waymarker 75, at the path towards Selva, continue straight on along hiking trail no. 30 in the direction of Santa Cristina. At the bottom of the Monte Pana lift, rejoin the tour described above at waymarker 95 along the banks of the Grödner Bach/Rio Gardena.

4. Short cut through the Jender Valley: an even shorter tour is possible by continuing straight on at waymarker 65 through the Jender Valley to Val Gardena. Al waymarker 101, just before Ortisei, you rejoin the tour described above.

Getting there
Coming from the north:
take motorway (A22) exit for Chiusa - Alpe di Siusi, SS12 as far as Ponte Gardena, then in the direction of Alpe di Siusi.
Coming from the south:
take motorway (A22) exit for Bolzano nord - Alpe di Siusi, SS12 as far as Prato all’Isarco, then in the direction of Alpe di Siusi.

There are several car parks and underground parking facilities in all villages. Parking spaces marked in blue are subject to charges. Tickets are available from the appropriate automatic machines.
The tour begins at the tourist information office in Castelrotto.
